Theories of Art offers a thorough-going analysis and reassessment of major trends in European art theory and the development of that theory from the time of Plato to the early eighteenth century. Greek and Roman philosophers were not directly involved in the theory of visual arts. They were usually far removed from the workshop experiences of artistic creation, and spoke out in the margins of their thoughts on painting and sculpture. However, they occasionally expressed theoretical insights into the works of artists and, above all, provided conceptual frameworks for the artistic debates of later times. They thought and helped to create a broad cultural context in which the visual arts were explored.
What this brief review shows us is that the conflict in classical literature with the visual arts, that is, familiarity with these arts on the one hand, and the lack of a specific theory about them on the other, is not the result of the disappearance of treatises; Rather, it points to a fundamental issue that lies at the heart of the classical approach to the performing arts.
